OCEAN FREIGHT BASICS

WHAT ARE LCL & FCL?

LCL and FCL are two common ways to move cargo by ocean container.

With LCL — Less Than Container Load, your shipment shares container space with cargo from other shippers.

With FCL — Full Container Load, one container is booked for your shipment.

THE CHEAPEST OPTION DEPENDS ON THE COMPLETE SHIPMENT Cargo volume matters, but the final decision should also consider route, destination charges, container rates, handling, transit requirements and cargo characteristics.
LCL

LESS THAN CONTAINER LOAD

Multiple shipments are consolidated into one container. You pay for the space and handling associated with your portion of the container.

  • Shared container space
  • Suitable for smaller shipments
  • Usually priced using cargo volume and/or weight
  • Requires consolidation and deconsolidation
  • No need to book a complete container
VS
FCL

FULL CONTAINER LOAD

A complete container is booked for one shipper's cargo, even if every cubic meter of available space is not used.

  • Dedicated container
  • Common for larger cargo volumes
  • Pricing normally quoted per container
  • Less consolidation handling
  • 20GP, 40GP and 40HQ options

WHEN TO USE LCL

LCL CAN MAKE SENSE FOR SMALLER CARGO.

LCL allows importers to access ocean freight without paying for an entire container.

01 SMALLER SHIPMENTS

Cargo does not require enough space to justify booking a complete container.

02 LOWER INVENTORY VOLUMES

Useful when replenishing stock in smaller quantities rather than importing large batches.

03 MULTIPLE SUPPLIERS

Cargo can potentially be consolidated before international shipment.

04 COST BEFORE SPEED

Importers willing to allow additional consolidation handling may benefit from LCL.

FCL ONE SHIPMENT ONE CONTAINER
WHEN TO USE FCL

FCL CAN MAKE SENSE AS VOLUME INCREASES.

As shipment volume grows, the total cost of LCL handling and shared-container charges can sometimes approach or exceed the cost of booking a complete container.

FCL may also be preferred when customers want dedicated container space or fewer consolidation stages.

01 Larger cargo volume
02 Dedicated container
03 Fewer consolidation stages
04 Regular inventory shipments

COMMON QUESTION

HOW MANY CBM BEFORE FCL BECOMES CHEAPER?

There is no universal CBM number at which FCL automatically becomes cheaper than LCL.

The break-even point changes with container rates, origin and destination charges, cargo density, consolidation fees and current market conditions.

THE CORRECT APPROACH: COMPARE THE TOTAL LCL COST WITH THE TOTAL FCL COST FOR YOUR ACTUAL SHIPMENT.

CARGO HANDLING

WHY DOES LCL INVOLVE MORE HANDLING?

LCL shipments from multiple customers need to be consolidated before ocean transportation and separated again after arrival.

This adds additional warehouse and cargo-handling stages compared with many FCL shipments.

FCL EQUIPMENT

COMMON CONTAINER OPTIONS

20GP

20-FOOT GENERAL PURPOSE

Common for shipments that need a full container but do not require the volume of 40-foot equipment.

40GP

40-FOOT GENERAL PURPOSE

Provides significantly greater internal volume than a standard 20-foot container.

Exact container dimensions, usable volume and payload depend on the equipment and carrier used.
MULTIPLE SUPPLIERS?

CONSOLIDATE CARGO BEFORE SHIPPING.

Buyers sourcing from several Chinese suppliers can send inventory to one warehouse before international transportation.

Consolidation can simplify supplier coordination and help determine the most appropriate international shipping option for the combined cargo.
