QUICK ANSWER

WHAT DOES
FAS MEAN?

Under FAS (Free Alongside Ship), the seller delivers the goods when they are placed alongside the vessel nominated by the buyer at the named port of shipment.

The seller completes export clearance and bears the cost and risk of bringing the goods to that alongside-vessel delivery point. From there, the buyer bears the risk and arranges loading, main ocean carriage, import clearance and onward delivery.

FAS IS ONLY FOR SEA OR INLAND WATERWAY TRANSPORTIt is commonly associated with bulk, breakbulk, heavy or project cargo where delivery alongside a vessel is a real physical step. For most containerized cargo handed to a terminal earlier, FCA may fit better.
01

SELLER DELIVERS ALONGSIDE

The seller brings the goods to the named port and places them alongside the buyer-nominated vessel.

02

SELLER CLEARS EXPORT

The seller handles export customs formalities before FAS delivery is completed.

03

BUYER CONTROLS MAIN FREIGHT

The buyer arranges vessel space, loading, ocean freight, insurance if desired and destination-side logistics.

RESPONSIBILITY SPLIT

WHO DOES WHAT
UNDER FAS?

FAS keeps origin-side export delivery with the seller and puts vessel loading and main carriage under the buyer's control.

SELLER

  • Provide goods according to the sales contract
  • Package and mark the goods as required
  • Arrange transport to the named port of shipment
  • Complete export customs clearance
  • Obtain export licences / approvals when required
  • Place the goods alongside the buyer-nominated vessel
  • Bear cost and risk until FAS delivery occurs

  • Contract and pay the main ocean carriage
  • Bear risk after the goods are delivered alongside
  • Arrange cargo insurance if desired
  • Handle import customs clearance and taxes
  • Arrange destination and onward delivery
WHAT DOES “ALONGSIDE” MEAN?

THE DELIVERY POINT
IS NEXT TO THE VESSEL

FAS delivery occurs before the goods are loaded on board. The cargo must be placed alongside the nominated vessel at the named port of shipment.

STEP 01PORT ARRIVAL

Seller brings the cargo to the agreed port area.

STEP 02ALONGSIDE VESSEL

Goods are positioned at the quay, barge or other agreed alongside point.

STEP 03FAS DELIVERY

Risk transfers from seller to buyer.

STEP 04VESSEL LOADING

Buyer-side responsibility begins.

RISK TRANSFER

WHERE DOES
FAS RISK TRANSFER?

Risk transfers when the goods are placed alongside the buyer-nominated vessel at the named port of shipment.

MOST COMMON COMPARISON

FAS VS FOB:
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Both are sea-only origin rules and both leave main ocean freight with the buyer. The difference is where delivery occurs.

FAS

DELIVERY ALONGSIDE

Seller places the goods alongside the nominated vessel. Buyer is responsible for loading onto the vessel.

IMPORTANT FOR CONTAINERS

FAS VS FCA

FAS assumes a real delivery point alongside a vessel. Containerized cargo is usually handed to a terminal or carrier before the ship is alongside the cargo.

FASALONGSIDE VESSEL

Best matched to cargo where the seller can physically deliver next to the nominated vessel.

SEA / INLAND WATERWAY ONLY
FCADELIVERY TO CARRIER

Often better suited to containers and cargo handed over at terminals before vessel loading.

FAS VS CFR

WHO PAYS THE
MAIN OCEAN FREIGHT?

FAS and CFR are both sea / inland-waterway rules, but they allocate main freight very differently.

FASBUYER PAYS MAIN FREIGHT

Seller's cost obligation ends with delivery alongside the vessel.

CFRSELLER PAYS MAIN FREIGHT

Seller pays ocean carriage to the named destination port, although risk still transfers at origin.

COMMON FAS USE CASES

WHAT TYPES OF CARGO
FIT FAS BETTER?

FAS is most logical when the physical delivery process actually involves positioning goods alongside a nominated vessel before loading.

01BULK CARGO

Commodities or cargo loaded directly from port-side facilities.

02BREAKBULK

Large individual pieces not packed in standard containers.

03HEAVY / PROJECT CARGO

Machinery or oversized units requiring planned vessel-side handling.

04BARGE-SIDE DELIVERY

Where the agreed port operation uses barges or other alongside positioning.

SHIPPING FROM CHINA

HOW DOES FAS
FROM CHINA WORK?

FAS can work for certain China-origin sea shipments when the supplier is able to place cargo alongside a buyer-nominated vessel and the buyer wants to control loading and ocean freight.

01BUYER NOMINATES VESSEL

Buyer provides the vessel, port and shipping instructions.

02SUPPLIER PREPARES CARGO

Goods and export packaging are prepared.

03EXPORT CLEARANCE

Seller completes China export customs formalities.

04DELIVERY ALONGSIDE

Seller positions the goods alongside the vessel.

05BUYER LOADS & SHIPS

Buyer arranges loading and ocean carriage.

06IMPORT & FINAL DELIVERY

Buyer handles destination customs and onward movement.

PRACTICAL CHECK

CAN THE SELLER REALLY
DELIVER ALONGSIDE?

Before agreeing to FAS, confirm that the supplier can access the required port area and physically complete the alongside-vessel delivery.

CHECK 01PORT ACCESS

Can the supplier or its logistics provider enter the required port area?

CHECK 02VESSEL SCHEDULE

Is the nominated vessel and delivery window clearly communicated?

CHECK 03CARGO HANDLING

Does the cargo need cranes, barges, special lifting or port equipment?

CHECK 04TERMINAL RULES

Do local port rules allow the planned FAS handover structure?

IF THE SELLER ONLY DELIVERS TO A TERMINAL, FCA MAY BE MORE ACCURATE.

The chosen Incoterm should match the actual physical handover rather than using FAS simply because the shipment travels by sea.

PRACTICAL DECISION

WHEN DOES FAS
MAKE SENSE?

FAS MAY FIT WHEN:
  • You are shipping by sea or inland waterway
  • The cargo can be physically delivered alongside the vessel
  • You want the buyer to control loading and main ocean freight
  • The seller can complete export clearance
  • The shipment is bulk, breakbulk, heavy or project cargo
CONSIDER ANOTHER TERM WHEN:
  • You want the seller to load the goods on board — consider FOB
  • Container cargo is delivered to a terminal earlier — consider FCA
  • You want seller-paid main freight — consider CFR / CIF
  • You want destination delivery — consider DAP / DDP where practical
CONTRACT WORDING

HOW SHOULD FAS
BE WRITTEN?

FAS uses a named port of shipment, not a destination port. State the exact port and, where possible, the specific terminal, quay or delivery point.

IN PRACTICE

DESTINATIONLos Angeles, USA

The buyer nominates the vessel and gives the supplier shipping instructions. The seller completes export clearance and places the cargo alongside that vessel at the agreed Shanghai port location.

Risk transfers to the buyer at that point. The buyer then arranges vessel loading, ocean freight, insurance if desired, U.S. import clearance and final delivery.
